Surrounded by mountains and ridges, Fuzhou’s downtown area is a typical estuary basin, and its elevation is mostly between 600 and 1,000 meters, with Gushan Mountain in the east, Qishan Mountain in the west, Wuhu Mountain in the south, and Lotus Peak in the north. The elevation is low in the east, high in the west. The city has a total area of 12,154 square kilometers, of which the total area of the urban area is 1,786 square kilometers.
Fuzhou is located on the southeastern edge of Eurasia, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east, and has a typical subtropical monsoon climate. Rich in climate resources, Fuzhou has a suitable temperature, warm and humid, evergreen all seasons, abundant rainfall, little frost and no snow, long summers, and short winters, with a frost-free period of 326 days. The annual average sunshine amount is 1700~1980 hours; the annual average precipitation is 900~2100mm. The annual average temperature is 16~20℃; the coldest month is January to February whose average temperature is 6~10℃; the hottest month is from June to August whose average temperature is 24 to 29°C. The highest temperature in Fuzhou that is ever recorded is 42.3℃ and the lowest is -2.5℃. The annual relative humidity is about 77%. The temperature at noon in summer could be as high as 36℃ in recent years due to the heat island effect and Fuzhou's basin topography. The dominant wind direction in Fuzhou is the northeast wind and in summer southerly wind. From July to September, the weather is hot, which is a concentrated period of the typhoon. On average, typhoons directly land on the city boundary twice a year. The best tourist season is from April to November each year.
Spring (from March to May): It is often rainy and the temperature changes greatly. This is also the season with the rainiest days of the year. There is a spring rain period (March to April) and a plum rain period (May). During the spring rainy period, the weather is hot and cold. In some years, there will be strong convective weather such as cold weather and hail. The temperature rises significantly and the humidity is high in this rainy period.
Summer (from June to September): Mostly, with high temperatures, the weather is sunny and hot, which is the period with lots of local geothermal thunderstorms, tropical storms, and typhoons.
Autumn (from October to December): with less humidity, the clouds are light, the sunshine is sufficient and the temperature is suitable;
Winter (from January to February): With very few sub-zero temperatures, the rainfall is generally low, and the climate is mild.
